Mythical heroes, larger than life, show us the values of a culture. This horse is antique (2nd century - 1st century BCE). The rider was added in1617 by Pietro Bernini, Gian Lorenzo’s father. It is installed very high up in the entrance hall of the Galleria Borghese. According to legend, a chasm had opened in the Forum Romanum and would not close until the Romans would throw what they held dearest into it. Claiming that valor was their most valuable possession, Marcus Curtius jumped fully-armed on horseback into the chasm. The drama of this moment is captured by the Baroque display: more than a story above your head, the figures leap off the wall.
Gli eroi mitici, in tutta la loro grandiosità, mostrano i valori rappresentativi di una cultura. Questo cavallo è antico (II - I secolo a.C.). Il cavaliere è stato aggiunto nel 1617 da Pietro Bernini, il padre di Gian Lorenzo. E esposto molto in alto nella sala d’ingresso della Galleria Borghese.
Secondo la leggenda, nel Foro Romano si apri una voragine destinata a rimanere aperta fino a quando i Romani non ci avessero gettato dentro il valore che ritenevano più importante. Sostenendo che il coraggio era la virtù a
loro più preziosa, Marco Curzio saltò con tanto di cavallo e armatura nella voragine. La drammaticità di questo momento viene colta nell'opera barocca: più di una semplice storia raffigurata davanti ai nostri occhi, sembra addirittura che le figure balzino fuori dal muro.
